Who Is a Good Candidate for Invisalign Treatment?

What Makes a Good Candidate for Invisalign Treatment

Determining who is a good candidate for Invisalign treatment can save you time, money, and frustration before you commit to clear aligners. Clear aligners have changed how people think about smile transformation: no metal brackets, no wires catching on your cheeks, and no awkward photos for the next two years. The catch? Invisalign isn’t right for everyone, and understanding whether you’re a good fit matters from day one.

What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a clear aligner system that gradually straightens teeth using a series of custom-made, removable trays worn 20 to 22 hours per day. The trays are crafted from FDA-cleared SmartTrack thermoplastic and replace the brackets and wires of traditional braces with a nearly invisible alternative.

Each tray applies gentle, controlled pressure to shift your teeth into their ideal positions. You remove the aligners only for eating, drinking anything besides water, and brushing your teeth. Every one to two weeks, you swap to a new set of aligners that continues the movement.

The system treats everything from minor spacing issues to more complex bite problems in both teens and adults. Your orthodontist creates each aligner using 3D digital scans of your mouth, mapping out precisely how your teeth will move from day one to your final smile.

How Invisalign Treatment Works

Invisalign treatment follows a clear path: a digital scan captures your teeth, your orthodontist designs a custom plan, you wear a series of trays for 20-22 hours daily, swap them every one to two weeks, and check in every six to eight weeks. Most cases finish within six to 18 months depending on complexity.

It all begins with that digital scan. Gone are the days of biting into goopy impression trays. A handheld scanner captures thousands of data points, creating an exact 3D model of your teeth in minutes.

From there, your orthodontist designs a custom plan for your smile goals. This digital plan shows exactly how each tooth will shift, week by week, until you reach your final result. You can actually see a preview of your results before treatment even begins. At practices like Beverly Hills Orthodontics, where the clinical team holds Blue Diamond Top 1% Provider status, this planning step helps map even tricky movements with precision.

Once approved, a lab creates your full series of aligners. Most people receive several sets at once, reducing the number of office visits needed. You’ll check in every six to eight weeks so your orthodontist can monitor progress and make any adjustments.

Length of care varies based on complexity. Straightforward cases might wrap up in six months. More involved corrections typically take 12 to 18 months. Some complex cases run longer. Your orthodontist gives you a realistic timeline during your initial free consult.

The key to success? Consistency. Wearing your aligners the prescribed hours keeps treatment on track. Skip days or wear them less than recommended, and your teeth won’t move as planned.

Benefits of Choosing Invisalign

At a glance, here’s why so many patients choose clear aligners:

  • Nearly invisible appearance for discreet wear
  • No food restrictions since aligners come out for meals
  • Smooth plastic that’s easier on cheeks and lips
  • Simpler brushing and flossing without wires in the way
  • Fewer in-office visits compared to braces
  • Predictable, previewable results from digital planning

How Discreet Is Invisalign?

The clear plastic makes aligners almost undetectable. Most people won’t notice you’re wearing them unless you point it out. This matters for professionals, teens worried about school photos, and anyone who wants to keep their smile transformation private.

Can I Eat Normally with Invisalign?

Yes, you can eat whatever you want. There’s no list of forbidden foods like with braces. Pop out your aligners, enjoy your meal, brush your teeth, and put them back in. Simple.

How Comfortable Are the Aligners?

Smooth plastic edges mean no poking wires or metal brackets rubbing against your cheeks and lips. You might feel pressure when starting a new tray, but it’s typically mild and fades within a day or two.

Is Oral Hygiene Easier with Invisalign?

Brushing and flossing happen normally since you remove the aligners first. No threading floss under wires or using special brushes to clean around brackets, which makes daily hygiene habits much easier to maintain.

How Often Will I Visit the Office?

Without the need for wire adjustments, you’ll spend less time in the orthodontist’s chair. Check-ins happen every six to eight weeks rather than monthly.

Are the Outcomes Predictable?

Digital treatment planning shows your projected results upfront. You know what to expect before committing, which removes much of the uncertainty patients feel about pursuing smile goals.

Invisalign vs. Traditional Braces: Which Is Right for You?

Invisalign offers discretion and removability, while traditional braces handle complex cases without relying on patient compliance. Both options straighten teeth effectively, and the best choice depends on your specific situation, lifestyle, and treatment needs.

Factor Invisalign Traditional Braces
Appearance Nearly invisible clear plastic Visible metal or ceramic brackets
Comfort Smooth edges, no wires Brackets and wires may irritate cheeks
Removability Fully removable Fixed to teeth throughout treatment
Food Restrictions None (remove aligners to eat) Avoid hard, sticky, and chewy foods
Oral Hygiene Brush and floss normally Requires special cleaning techniques
Treatment Scope Mild to moderate complexity Handles severe and complex cases
Compliance Required High (must wear 20-22 hours daily) None (always working)
Office Visits Every 6-8 weeks Every 4-6 weeks

Braces remain the better option for severe skeletal issues, significant tooth rotations, or cases requiring precise vertical movements. They work continuously without relying on patient compliance.

Invisalign works well for adults and teens who want discretion, have mild to moderate alignment issues, and can commit to wearing their aligners consistently.

What Affects the Cost of Invisalign?

Several factors influence your total cost:

Treatment complexity

Simple spacing corrections cost less than fixing severe crowding combined with bite issues. More complex cases require more aligners and longer treatment times. In most cases, Invisalign falls within a price range comparable to traditional braces.

Number of aligners

Each tray adds to the cost. A six-month case uses fewer aligners than an 18-month treatment plan.

Provider experience

Orthodontists with extensive Invisalign training, like those designated as Blue Diamond providers, bring expertise that can improve outcomes. A practice such as Beverly Hills Orthodontics, recognized as a Blue Diamond Top 1% Provider, reflects significant Invisalign case experience that translates directly into better planning for tricky movements.

Geographic location

Treatment costs vary by region. Major metropolitan areas typically have higher fees than rural communities.

Insurance coverage

Many dental insurance plans cover Invisalign the same way they cover braces. Check your policy for orthodontic benefits. FSA and HSA accounts can also help offset costs.

Payment plans

Most practices offer simple & affordable financing that breaks the total cost into manageable monthly payments. This makes treatment accessible without a large upfront expense.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Invisalign Treatment?

A good candidate for Invisalign treatment is a teen or adult with fully erupted permanent teeth, mild to moderate alignment issues, healthy gums, no active decay, and the willingness to wear aligners 20 to 22 hours each day. Strong daily compliance, realistic expectations, and a commitment to attending check-ins matter just as much as the underlying clinical picture. Here’s what orthodontists look for in more detail:

Have Your Permanent Teeth Fully Erupted?

Invisalign works best when all adult teeth are in place, typically meaning teens 13 and older or adults of any age. Younger children with mixed dentition usually need different approaches.

Do You Have Mild to Moderate Orthodontic Issues?

Invisalign effectively treats:

  • Crowded teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Overbite (upper teeth extend too far over lower teeth)
  • Underbite (lower teeth sit in front of upper teeth)
  • Crossbite (some upper teeth sit inside lower teeth)
  • Open bite (teeth don’t meet when mouth closes)

Can You Commit to Wearing Aligners Consistently?

Compliance matters more than anything else. You must wear aligners 20 to 22 hours every single day, removing them only for eating and oral hygiene. Patients who struggle with this discipline see slower results or treatment failure.

Are Your Teeth and Gums Healthy?

Healthy gums and teeth free from active decay create the best foundation. Any existing oral beauty concerns should be addressed before starting. Smoking stains aligners and can impact gum health during treatment, so non-smokers tend to have better experiences.

Who Might Not Be Ideal Candidates?

  • People with severe skeletal jaw discrepancies requiring surgery
  • Those with teeth rotated more than 20 degrees
  • Patients who cannot commit to wearing aligners consistently
  • Individuals with certain dental restorations that affect how aligners fit

According to the American Association of Orthodontists, an in-person evaluation remains the only reliable way to determine candidacy. Photos and online quizzes can’t capture bite relationships, gum health, or root positioning. A free consult with a Blue Diamond Top 1% Provider gives you the most reliable answer.

Frequently Asked Questions About Invisalign Candidacy

Can teens get Invisalign?

Yes. Invisalign Teen was designed specifically for adolescents. It includes compliance indicators that fade with wear, helping parents and orthodontists track whether aligners are being worn enough. Teens as young as 13 with fully erupted permanent teeth can be excellent candidates.

Does Invisalign work for severe crowding?

It depends on the degree. Moderate crowding responds well to Invisalign. Severe crowding might require tooth extraction or preliminary treatment with braces before transitioning to aligners. Your orthodontist can assess whether your crowding falls within Invisalign’s effective range.

Can I get Invisalign with crowns or veneers?

Usually, yes. Aligners can move teeth with crowns or veneers, though attachments (small tooth-colored bumps that help aligners grip) might not bond as effectively to certain restorations. Your orthodontist evaluates your specific dental work during your free consult.

How do I know if I’m a candidate without a consultation?

You can’t know for certain. Online quizzes and smile assessments provide general guidance, but they miss critical factors like root health, bone density, and precise bite relationships. A free consult with an orthodontist, ideally one with deep clinical experience like the team at Beverly Hills Orthodontics, gives you a definitive answer.

Is there an age limit for Invisalign?

No upper age limit exists. Adults in their 50s, 60s, and beyond successfully complete Invisalign treatment regularly. The key factors are healthy teeth and gums, not age. Many adults choose Invisalign because it’s discreet and fits their professional lives. Working with a Blue Diamond Top 1% Provider can be especially helpful for older patients who may have existing restorations or refined aesthetic goals.

Can I switch from braces to Invisalign mid-treatment?

Yes, switching from braces to Invisalign mid-treatment is possible in some cases. If braces have already achieved significant movement, your orthodontist might transition you to aligners to finish treatment. This hybrid approach works for some patients but depends on your specific case and remaining corrections needed.

Lovely people. Totally professional and top-notch facilities. Even though my particular issue would require a different specialist, they referred me to a great one, and Dr Madden was every bit as fantastic as I’d heard she was. Empathetic and insightful. I will come back here when my kids need braces for sure.

I recommend BHO if you want premier Invisalign treatment along with a strong connection with the people that help treat you.

I’ve been with BHO for around two and a half years now, and the amount of progress I’ve made in my bite is astounding. I wish I could attach photos, but I started off with a bite that looked like if you combined the worst parts of a crossbite and underbite, and then doubled the severity.

However, now I’m nearly done, and find that I when I smile and look in the mirror, I am genuinely happy at what I see. Dr. Madan is a great orthodontist without doubt, but also I believe equally as good in quality of character. The relationship between client and provider in any sort of medical service is paramount, and whenever I’ve brought up my concerns to her she’s answered wholeheartedly.

Once again, if you have any orthodontic issues - crooked teeth, gaps, or most importantly with your bite, then BHO won’t let you down.
Response from the owner:Thank you, Ryan, for your wonderful review! It’s fantastic to hear about your remarkable progress and your positive experience with Dr. Madan. We’re committed to building strong relationships and ensuring every smile shines bright!
Cindy M.
