Is It Too Late to Get Braces as an Adult?

Love Yourself, Love Your Smile

A woman shows off her braces and the sparkling smile behind them.
  • Dr. Monica Madan
  • May 16, 2026

Is It Ever Too Late to Get Braces? The Short Answer

No, it’s not too late to get braces as an adult. If your teeth and gums are healthy, you can straighten your smile at almost any age. Your bone tissue continues to remodel throughout your entire life, which means tooth movement remains possible whether you’re 30, 50, or beyond.

The idea that braces are only for teenagers is outdated. A growing share of orthodontic patients today are adults who want straighter teeth for both health and confidence reasons. What matters most isn’t your birthday. It’s the health of your gums and the bone supporting your teeth. Adults with well-maintained oral health routinely achieve beautiful, lasting results. At Beverly Hills Orthodontics, our team sees patients across every decade of adulthood who are ready to invest in themselves and love their smile.

How Adult Braces Treatment Takes Shape

Working toward straighter teeth as an adult follows a clear, predictable process built around your needs and lifestyle. The team at Beverly Hills Orthodontics walks you through each phase so you always know what’s next.

What Happens at the Initial Consultation?

Your first visit includes a careful exam, digital photographs, and 3D imaging or scans. This gives your orthodontist a full picture of your teeth, jaw, and bite. Adults often benefit from a periodontal evaluation before starting, ensuring your gums and bone are ready for the process ahead. A free consult is the easiest place to start.

How Is Your Treatment Plan Customized?

Based on your assessment, you’ll receive a plan shaped around your bite, your timeline, and your lifestyle. Braces options include traditional metal braces, ceramic braces that blend with your teeth, lingual braces placed behind your teeth, or clear aligners like Invisalign. Our skilled orthodontist brings years of experience and AAO membership to every case, making it easy to explore your options with confidence.

What Should You Expect During Active Treatment?

This is the fun part, your smile starts changing. You’ll come in for periodic visits for adjustments or to receive new aligners. Adult patients typically visit every four to eight weeks, and many tell us those check-ins quickly become a highlight. The length of this phase depends on your specific goals and the complexity of your case.

Why Does the Retention Phase Matter?

Once your teeth reach their ideal positions, retainers keep them there. This phase is essential for maintaining your results long-term. Your orthodontist will recommend the best retention approach for your situation.

Benefits of Getting Braces as an Adult

Straightening your teeth as an adult delivers benefits that go well beyond appearance.

How Do Straight Teeth Improve Oral Health?

Properly aligned teeth are simpler to brush and floss. This reduces your risk of cavities, gum disease, and the complications that come with both. Cleaner teeth, healthier gums, easier daily care.

How Does Alignment Affect Bite Function?

When your teeth fit together correctly, you chew more efficiently and put less strain on your jaw joints. Many adults find relief from TMJ discomfort after their new smile is in place.

What Other Benefits Should Adults Expect?

Beyond function, the additional benefits include:

  • A confidence boost that shows. Your smile affects how you present yourself professionally and socially. Adults often feel more self-assured in meetings, interviews, and everyday interactions afterward.
  • Discreet options that fit your life. Today’s clear aligners and ceramic braces are nearly invisible. Straighten your teeth without drawing attention to your treatment.
  • A long-term win for your health. Results last for years when maintained with proper retention. You’re not just improving your smile for today, you’re protecting your oral beauty for decades to come.

How Is Adult Orthodontic Treatment Different from Child Treatment?

While the goal is the same across all ages, there are a few real differences in how treatment plays out for adults versus children.

Factor Children & Teens Adults
Bone Density Less dense, allowing faster movement Denser bone, which can slow tooth movement
Typical Treatment Length Often shorter on average Often slightly longer due to bone density
Jaw Growth Still developing, enabling skeletal correction Fully developed, focus on tooth position
Existing Dental Work Usually minimal May include crowns, bridges, or prior restorations
Gum Health Typically healthy May require periodontal evaluation first
Treatment Goals Alignment plus growth guidance Alignment plus functional improvement

Adult bone is denser than a child’s, which can mean tooth movement takes a bit longer. Children’s jaws are still growing, allowing orthodontists to guide skeletal development in ways that aren’t possible once growth is complete.

Adults often arrive with existing restorations, some gum recession, or general wear that needs to be considered. Your orthodontist will factor these elements into your plan. Both adults and children achieve excellent results with proper planning and care from a board-certified team like the one at Beverly Hills Orthodontics.

What Affects the Cost of Adult Braces?

Adult braces cost varies by appliance type, case complexity, and treatment length. Clear aligners and lingual braces typically sit at the higher end. Traditional metal braces often land at the more accessible end of the range. With flexible payment plans, smile goals can feel simple and affordable for nearly every budget.

Several factors influence what you’ll spend on your new smile. Understanding these helps you plan with confidence.

Cost Factor Impact on Price
Type of Appliance Clear aligners and lingual braces typically cost more than traditional metal
Case Complexity Severe crowding or bite issues require more time and expertise
Treatment Length Longer treatment means more visits and adjustments
Additional Procedures Extractions, restorations, or prep work add to the total
Accelerated Options Technology to speed treatment may increase cost

How Can You Make Adult Treatment Affordable?

Many dental insurance plans often include coverage for adult orthodontics. Flexible spending accounts (FSA) and health savings accounts (HSA) can also help. Our practice works with patients to find comfortable monthly payment options, keeping things simple and affordable. A free smile assessment gives you a clear picture of your numbers before you commit.

Are You a Good Candidate for Adult Braces?

Most adults who want straighter teeth can achieve them. The primary requirements are healthy gums and adequate bone support. Age itself rarely disqualifies anyone, and the team at Beverly Hills Orthodontics regularly welcomes patients in every stage of life.

You’re likely a good candidate if you have:

  • Gums free of active periodontal disease
  • Sufficient bone density to support tooth movement
  • Realistic expectations about timeline
  • Commitment to wearing aligners or maintaining braces as directed

Common reasons adults seek a new smile:

  • Crowding that has worsened over time
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Relapse after childhood braces
  • Bite issues causing discomfort or wear
  • Desire for a more confident smile

What might need attention first:

If you have untreated cavities or gum disease, these should be resolved before starting. Smokers and patients who grind their teeth may need extra planning to ensure the best outcome. Our skilled orthodontist, an active AAO member, will review every detail with you.

A consultation visit determines which appliance fits your goals and lifestyle. Whether you prefer the precision of traditional braces or the flexibility of clear aligners, your orthodontist will help you explore your options and guide you toward the right choice.

Frequently Asked Questions About Adult Braces

How long does adult treatment take?

Most adult cases take between 12 and 30 months, depending on complexity. Minor alignment issues may resolve faster, while significant bite corrections take longer. Your orthodontist provides a timeline estimate during your free consult based on your specific situation.

Do braces hurt more as an adult?

Discomfort levels are similar for adults and teens. You may feel pressure or soreness for a few days after adjustments, but this is manageable with over-the-counter relief. Most patients adapt quickly and find the experience more comfortable than expected.

Can adults get Invisalign instead of metal braces?

Many adults are excellent candidates for Invisalign or other clear aligner systems. These work well for mild to moderate crowding, spacing, and certain bite issues. Some complex cases still benefit from traditional braces. Your orthodontist will recommend the most effective option for your goals.

Will my teeth shift back after treatment?

Teeth naturally want to return to their original positions, which is why retention matters. Wearing your retainer as directed keeps your results stable for years. Most adults wear retainers at night indefinitely to protect their results.

Is there an upper age limit for braces?

There’s no upper age limit. Adults in their 60s, 70s, and beyond have successfully reached their smile goals. The key factor is oral health, not age. If your gums and bone are healthy, treatment is possible. Beverly Hills Orthodontics has welcomed patients across every age range.

Does dental insurance cover adult braces?

Many dental plans frequently cover part of adult orthodontics, though benefits vary widely. Check with your provider about your specific plan. FSA and HSA funds can also offset costs, and most practices offer payment plans to keep things simple and affordable. It’s never too late to love yourself and love your smile. Ortho is for everyone, and to explore what’s possible, book your evaluation today.

Lovely people. Totally professional and top-notch facilities. Even though my particular issue would require a different specialist, they referred me to a great one, and Dr Madden was every bit as fantastic as I’d heard she was. Empathetic and insightful. I will come back here when my kids need braces for sure.

I recommend BHO if you want premier Invisalign treatment along with a strong connection with the people that help treat you.

I’ve been with BHO for around two and a half years now, and the amount of progress I’ve made in my bite is astounding. I wish I could attach photos, but I started off with a bite that looked like if you combined the worst parts of a crossbite and underbite, and then doubled the severity.

However, now I’m nearly done, and find that I when I smile and look in the mirror, I am genuinely happy at what I see. Dr. Madan is a great orthodontist without doubt, but also I believe equally as good in quality of character. The relationship between client and provider in any sort of medical service is paramount, and whenever I’ve brought up my concerns to her she’s answered wholeheartedly.

Once again, if you have any orthodontic issues - crooked teeth, gaps, or most importantly with your bite, then BHO won’t let you down.
Response from the owner:Thank you, Ryan, for your wonderful review! It’s fantastic to hear about your remarkable progress and your positive experience with Dr. Madan. We’re committed to building strong relationships and ensuring every smile shines bright!
