Expander braces work by exerting gentle pressure on the maxillary teeth. The metal arms of the expander press against the tongue side of the top teeth, and as the internal screw is turned, the expander widens, causing the metal arms to exert gentle forces on the teeth pushing them farther apart.

Expander braces work best during Early Orthodontics or Phase I Treatment. Because expander braces move the bones in your jaw, they are most effective during early adolescence when your bones are still moving and growing.
